Portrait of Ruin is the second Nintendo DS Castlevania game. Maybe, if Komani thinks it'll be worthwile, a third one will follow, since there have been three Castlevania games released for the predecessor the Gameboy Advance. All excellent Handheld Metroidvania games, but which one excels at what? A short overview would be handy indeed. Well here you go!

The Nintendo Switch has been on active duty here for longer than I can remember myself playing on any of my previous home consoles. Of course the Wii had it's **Virtual Console** service where Nintendo forced you to pay another 5 EUR for NES, 8 EUR for SNES and 10 EUR for N64 games that were carefully, week by week, re-released. It must have been the fourth time I've bought the Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past. I'm a sucker for retro stuff (hence this website) so naturally I started nagging as the Switch doesn't support this kind of retroness (yet).

I've never been a great fan of emulation: playing games on a system that wasn't the target platform. It's great for games that you otherwise would never be able to play like Mother 3 that never makes it's way to the European Union, but otherwise playing a GBA game on the Wii U doesn't include that pure nostalgia rush you'd get while gripping a "real" Gameboy (modified or not). That's not to say that I didn't take part in this: I knew my way well around [https://gbatemp.net/](https://gbatemp.net/).

That got me thinking, what is it with these old games that make me happy when I play them? Is it purely because of the "retroness", the big buttons on yellowed plastic with short cables that require you to sit close to your TV? No! It's the difference between the words **retro** and **nostalgic**. "Nostalgic" throws me back in time and make me re-appreciate the goodness of yore.

It's been over 20 years since I last touched any of the Wario Land games. I vaguely remember them being one of the most exciting platformers I've ever played as a kid. However, thanks to my manic tidying itches, I sold most if not all Gameboy games I've ever owned. Thanks to a recent resurgence in retro game interest, I came across a Wario game for the Gameboy. The shopkeeper sold them all 4 and raised his brow when I wanted to pay. "You must be a big Wario fan eh?". Indeed. It turns out that I am.

Not many first person action Roleplaying games are well known, except the Ultima Underground series and of course the Elder Scrolls games. FP RPGs date back from Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder and Might & Magic (see Roleplaying Concepts), but none of those games actually enable you to swing with a sword in a real time fashion. The Gothic games utilize the third person camera angle, so the only games which might get remotely close to being Arx Fatalis are Daggerfall/Morrowind and Ultima Underworld.
What does Morrowind share with Arx Fatalis? Arx is a FP RPG, combat is basically hit- and run tactics, eurhm... I guess that's it! Not quite a lot indeed. It is safe to assume Arx Fatalis was meant to be Ultima Underworld III. As Wikipedia states, Arkane Studios couldn't get the proper license for the name, but in the end that doesn't really matter. Arx is a pure dungeon crawler, you will never see big open (and mostly empty) spaces as seen in Morrowind. You will never see more than 5 cities with enourmous amounths of NPCs without any realistic conversations. And that's good.

After the successful and beloved Jagged Alliance squad-based turn-based strategy game (a whole mouth full), Sir-Tech expanded the genre by adding the sequel, Jagged Alliance 2, which was published later in 1999. On a side note, it's sad to see the JA series become more and more popular thanks to mass download methods like Steam, after the virtual death of the company itself. Well anyway, decide for yourself if the purchase (while you're at it, nab the Gold version!) is worth it or not.

In the year 1999 the then-existing company New World Computing released version seven of their honored Might & Magic series, subtitled "**For Blood and Honor**". Most Might & Magic [-(MM)-] fans were quite happy since VII is by many people marked as (at least one of) the best in the series. Sadly, even New World Computing disappeared in 2003 and Ubisoft the giant looking evil company bought all NWC rights. The Might & Magic VII Publisher, 3DO also closed their doors. What's up with that? Is this some kind of bad disease, creating a brilliant game no-one cares about and thus nobody likes to play except hard-core fans? Let's not try to blame it on **EA** again.

The biggest problem with Nox is not its gameplay, nor the graphics: its the unlucky release schedule. Diablo II came out in the same years, only five months later, and was also an isometric click-click-click-more-clickedy-click game, where one picks up loot and one kills monsters. That's where the comparison ends, I think. It got a fair bit of criticism due to this unlucky comparison, which to be honest is very unfair, since the game started out as a wholly different concept: fast-paced multiplayer wizard battles. The second and third class, Conjurer and Warrior, including the singleplayer campaign, where added later. And that is remarkable: the most enjoyable part of Nox for me is playing through the singleplayer campain with all three different classes!

### Battle System
Riviera is a turn-based jRPG. In it, the player takes turns and the enemy or enemies take turns. Simple, and nothing new. Before entering a battle however, we first select which items to use in the battle itself. You can only select four items. There's also a positioning system: you can pick two team members and place them in the frontlines, hoping they'll protect your weaker mage. So, two team members plus one weaker mage is three. That's right, you can only employ three characters at a time. There are more in your party though.

When you decide to use one of the items in battle (this includes weapons!), their durability counter decreases by one. If the counter hits zero, the item disappears. Here once again you have to carefully plan the powerful item usage (it's best to wait for the "big" boss). Luckily for us, items do not deprecate when in training modus and your characters do learn new skills and gain experience points. Riviera kind of forces you to learn new abilities through training mode instead of the actual journey, after you've found new types of weapons.

Without new skills you won't stand a chance.

Argh, my temple, all messed up! Poseidon likes to destroy all buildings I carefully planted down on the coast line because he's cranky in the morning. Actually I did not do him a favour in the past few years and instead joined forces with one of the other major Greek Gods. What choice would you make? A couple of free superman-like heroes fighting side by side with your giant army, or a couple of free boats to roam and rule the sea? Before we move on I should really collect more taxes. Thank you rich people! - oh, I heard a reply: "No, thank you - ruler of this wonderful wealthy city!"
