### Introduction to the cleric/ranger
Since little non-playable and joinable characters are as good in healing as Viconia is, you might end up creating your own cleric. Especially if you intend to play as a neutral or good party. Remember Viconia and Keldorn both at the sime time in your party is asking for trouble: either one of the two will leave or they might even fight in later stages.
So, what's the worst part about the cleric, in general? He can even wear full plate mail and equip quite a few damaging weapons (maces, flails and more). But yes, the cleric lacks overall melee skills: you can't specialize as much in weapons as a fighter (obviously), you can't effectively dual wield, etc. Dual classing the cleric is a popular solution, mostly fighter/cleric or cleric/fighter. But! If you dualclass your ranger very early into a cleric (I'm talking about lvl7), you have access to all divine spells ànd all high level ranger spells as your character progresses throughout the game. Woah. This may sound like a cheesy and dirty trick. In fact, it pretty much is, so if you don't really like this, I suggest you still keep on reading and dual class your cleric with a class of your own choice.
The cleric/ranger combination actually works pretty well: high wisdom is needed for both classes to cast spells. Dex and Str are very useful, especially the first one. Don't build it up to 18 wearing plate mail though as it dismisses your evade bonus completely. There are good leather armors later in the game (if you've installed Throne of Bhaal: the obvious dungeon & further upgrades)

### Basic Progression guide
#### Start with a Ranger
Creating a ranger gives you the advantage to choose additional weapon specializations. In this guide, we are going to create a **dual wielding mace/flail** character. Don't pick non-blunt weapons because the cleric cannot use any of those (sword, katana, ... but also no (cross)bow). If you really really need to build a ranged weapon too, there's nothing much left except the slingshot. Remember, we'll have plenty of ranged attack spells so no worries here.
#### Statistics
- STR: Remember frost gaint belt e.a. - not too high. Max 14
- DEX: If you're going to wear full plate - no more than 12. Else (highly adviced!) as much as possible.
- CON: Between STR and DEX. 16 or 14 is okay for fortitude save throws. We do have (too many) heal spells.
- INT: No need for this. Might even drop to 8 as we need other stats.
- WIS: 18. Nothing less, most important stat.
- CHA: Depends on your play style. I'd pick 10 or 12, the charmed ring found in Athkatla Circus will set CHA to 18.
While playing the game, there is nothing much to follow or remember, just play it like you would play any regular cleric with a hybrid class. Dual class at level 7 to get the hightest level spells as a cleric. You'll automatically be able to cast all highest level druid spells thanks to the ranger class. Isn't that amazing! Remember to heal regulary since your low level character will probably have some difficulties in the beginning of the game. Once you start gaining level 3/4 and up spells you're powerful enough to take on most monsters with the help of your party members.

### Character Equipment

Weapons enough to use! Since most other party members use a different class of (melee or ranged) weapons, you have the freedom to fully claim all maces/flails and morning stars for yourself. Try to get the Flail of Ages as soon as possible to +3 since the extra elemental damage helps quite a lot to certain otherwise immune enemies. An undead crushing mace and a skull crusher are always handy, equip when needed. It's generally not needed to grab your slingshot as a backup weapon: use buff spells or ranged magic.
If you've installed Throne of Bhaal or the bonus merchants, you can get your hands on a nice leather armor quite soon. Shadow armor is always good (AC -1) and still one of the best leather armors there are in the game. But most of the time your thief or another character will claim those equipment pieces. If you can't find any decent set, temporary equip good plate mail. Remember to switch soon as it reduces your DEX bonus and completely nullifies your hard work to buff up the character.

Buy a frost belt/girdle from one of the bonus merchants or find one of the many available. It'll help inrease your damage output while swinging the dual maces or flails. If you plan on equipping another belt, you should've built your character different since 14 STR is not nearly enough. Of course, this build is quite melee minded, adjust as you see fit.

### Important Spell Pics
As a heavily melee oriented character, you'll want to primary equip yourself with buff and shield spells. That does not mean other spells are less important, they're just not as much used. You do have a backup mage or two as primary magic damage dealers, right? A typical encounter using your favourite cross-class (at low level): cast **protection from evil 12' radius**, cast **faith armor**, use your **draw upon holy might** innate ability (if present) and rush into melee range to protect your weaker party members. If things get hot, pull back and start casting heal wounds to further support other members. The cleric/ranger **can** be used as a tank, but shouldn't since he or she has powerful protective spells to help the party survive.
That being said, buffing also includes offensive buffs such as the high level **Blade barrier**. The spell **Sanctuary** renders you complete invisible and prevents enemies from targetting you. This gives you more than enough time to stay in melee range, damage enemies with your barrier ànd further support the party by healing/buffing/attacking. Your most important aid spells include **Lesser/greater restoration** against those annoying level draining vampires, **mass heal** obviously, **defensive harmony**, ...
The druid divine spell picks are merged with the cleric's. Luckily, as a cleric or divine spellcaster, you do not need to "pick" spells as you level up (like the Mage does). This means you have access to all spells of all levels once properly levelled up. The druid spells are mostly offensive (insect swarm) and summons (fire elementals, pixies, demons and more). Don't forget to cast protection from evil first or the creature will turn hostile after a few rounds.

### Introduction
With a small group of Forgotten Realms fans at Shrimprefuge, we decided to take on the Baldur's Gate world using only one character (hence "solo"). For most of us, this will be the first solo run so I figured we (and other readers) could use a report writeup as the characters progress through the game.

Before picking the class bard and kit blade, I did some basic research on how to play and which strategy should work - and which won't. The most resourceful report was definatly andijvieschotel 's one from the BioWare forums. Thanks to him, I managed to get through some very otherwise tough portions of the game, especially in the beginning. Let's get on with it, shall we.

Since the Nintendo DS has been released a couple of years ago, many game related websites predicted a quick and painful death for the Gameboy Advance. Thankfully, none of those predictions made it into reality since the GBA library is still steadily growing, although a whole lot slower than in 2002. Nintendo's smart marketing ideas enabled the DS to play GBA cartridges which indirectly prolongs the overall GBA's life. Therefore, a lot of potentially great games have been released but mainly ignored in favor of less entertaining DS games. So let's take a look at the most impressive GBA Roleplaying or Strategy games!
Of course no console or handheld's RPG collection is truly complete without any [Final Fantasy](/tags/final-fantasy) spin-off or port. The Japanese GBA library today includes FF I and II: Dawn of Souls, FF IV, FF V and FF VI. The last one will be released within a few months in the USA. The only missing Final Fantasy number is III, which is ported and recreated to the DS. I and II are bundled together in a complete package. But this package is mostly for FF lovers out there, because the game lacks pacing and the battle sequences are ridiculously easy compared to other Squaresoft games. IV suffers from little annoying glitches, the port is not so well-polished as we had hoped.
This leaves us with V and VI. Most people would probably agree VI is the superiour one and one of the best FF games in the series. But you can't play it yet on your GBA unless you're Japanese. Final Fantasy V includes a complex job system first introduced in III, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. You can swap jobs and keep certain special abilities, this enables you to build the ultimate magic swordsman. Good enough for more than 30 hours of handheld Roleplaying goodness. If you're looking for a handheld FF game, V is the game to get.

Fire Emblem and Sacred Stones on the GBA. Thank you Intelligent Systems!

Next up, the popularity gaining [Fire Emblem](/tags/fire-emblem) series from Intelligent Systems. You should remember **Intelligent** from the more than excellent Advance Wars Gameboy Advance Turn-based games. Fire Emblem is the equivalent in a, well, more **Fantasy-ish** setting. In FE, you guide a devoted team of warriors, priests, mages and more to victory and reclaim the land (or cleanse the evil spirits, heh). If you're looking for more gameplay related information you should read the [Fire Emblem Wikipedia entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Emblem).
Two Fire Emblem games made it to the Gameboy Advance, and even Europe (woah! We get something good...) and one recently to the Nintendo Gamecube. Because of the overall lacking Strategy RPG games on the GBA, FE was more than welcome and [it shows](http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/468480.asp?q=fire%20emblem). Both games are excellent and very well suited for mobile gaming, although some missions tend to be quite long. Thank you sleep mode. Sacred stones is arguably an overall better game due to the small class tweaks but it's a lot harder than the first GBA game.
Developing your main assault team is one of the highlights of the game. It's so satisfactional to transform a regular soldier into a sword master **+33% critical hits**? Hell yeah! But watch out though: once a character dies, you won't be seeing that one in the future: once dead always gone. Choosing between both games can be difficult, but I'd be safe to say both are very good GBA picks. If you never played any Fire Emblem game before, pick up the regular one (**Fire Emblem**, without the subtitle. In Japan, more than 4 FE games were released on SNES and sadly never translated).

Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

One of the underdog highlights of the whole Gameboy Advance library is without a doubt Atlus' Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis. Before we continue to hail the game, let's straighten up one thing: No, it's not better than Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together. But yes, it's one of the best time-soaking GBA games. Especially if you love turn-based Strategy RPGs or like to customize your characters. Sadly, the game was never published in Europe, but I doubt that would dramatically increase the game sales. It's one of those freaky **hardcore** in-it or lose-it games.
There is so much unseen depth kindly weaven into the game it almost blows my mind. You basically play it like any other Strategy RPG game: by taking turns and eliminating the enemy troops. But on the way you can cast devious spells to distract distant enemies or hire hawkmen to swiftly fly over hills, positioning them out of range and firing arrows without taking any hits. The only downside about TO is the overall slow gameplay: movement animations advance kind of slow and playing just one battle can easily take up to two hours. That's also an advantage of course.
And then there's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (FFTA). As you can see, the game borrows most of the graphics and gameplay mechanics directly from TO (no wonder, most of the team members were shifted onto developing FFTA). Indeed, FFTA mostly plays the same (yay!) but Squaresoft managed to screw up the gameplay real good by adding judges and judge cards (nay!). For instance, after entering a battle, there's a card which says "**Forbidden Bladed weapons**". If someone (including the enemy) attacks using a sword or katana, you'll get a yellow card. After 2 yellow cards you get thrown into jail and your buddies can go bribe you out. Fascinatingly frustrating, especially on missions where enemies are beasts and there's a "**Forbidden beast damage**" card.
Not only that, FFTA is very very easy compared to Tactics Ogre. And the music gets so repetitive after a while, argh. Oh yeah, and the game lacks a good story line. Pick Tactics Ogre above it all day long, but if you're hungry for more, FFTA might be for you. Or maybe not.

Yggdra Union and Riviera: The Promised Land

Sting's GBA debut, [Riviera: The Promised Land](/tags/riviera), is in it's heart a Strategy Roleplaying game. But it utilizes some very weird and uncommon gameplay mechanics - that's not directly a bad thing. Once on a mission, you travel through many set scenes without directly controlling the protagonist. How's that? Say you landed on a deep forest. There are 4 "**actions**" to do: **Look at grass**, **Go North/East** and **Open Chest**. By executing one of those actions you lose action points (which can obviously be refilled). The grass may reveal a hidden item, but may contain a poisonous snake. Same story for the chest. This makes Riviera very liniar (there are some secret places all right) but at the same time makes the game more enjoyable for a handheld system to play in quick bursts.
Once you've entered the battlefield, you can assign up to four members to fight (north/east/south/west) and up to four items to fight with. Every time you use an item, the item's durability counter decreases by one. If the counter hits zero, the item is gone forever. That sounds quite awkward and it really is: don't directly use all your powerful items before any boss encounter! The bad part about the whole item stuff is you can only carry 30 items at a time and you cannot sell any of them! In towns, navigation is the same as the missions, with unlimited action points.
On the other hand, there's the very recent Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone Strategy RPG game, also from Sting, published by our God Atlus. The game is a Tactical RPG in the vein of the Fire Emblem games, with an overhead view of a 2D map, managing miniture versions of your units. However, aside from the map view, it is quite different. A card system dictating your movement and potential skills plays into both enemy and ally turns, as well as the "Union" formation system, in which massive battles can take place between several platoons.
Both games are quite different than traditional SRPG handheld or console games and both games have the same extremely high quality audio and amazingly done sprite work. If you're looking for something different than Fire Emblem, but still utilizing the same core thoughts, definitely consider Yggdra Union.

Golden Sun 1 and 2: the Lost Age.

Camelot's attempt on a traditional/retro console Roleplaying game was very Enthusiasticly received back in 2001. Golden Sun is in essence a contemporary presentation of the traditional console role-playing game formula, where the player guides a cast of four characters as they journey through a fantasy-themed game world and interact with various Non playing Characters. Golden Sun also "**features**" random battles (good or not), just like the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series. One of the strongest points of the Golden Sun series is the stronly embedded puzzle aspect of the game.
Many of these puzzles revolve heavily around the usage of the games resident form of magic spells, "**Psynergy.**". Whereas most other RPGs limit the usage of their forms of magic to battles as offensive and defensive measures, Psynergy spells can be used both for battle and for solving puzzles in the games locales. By far the most important element in Golden Sun to differentiate it from other RPGs is the collecting and manipulation of magical creatures called Djinn. These Djinn creatures can be found everywhere in the Golden Sun world and can severely change your battle strategies, as you can of course use them to empower your Psynergy spells during fights.
The Golden Sun games met really strong reviews. Many praised the game's vibrant graphics, high-quality sound, and varied, refined RPG gameplay, with particular optimism on the Djinn-based gameplay system and Battle aspect. Of course all Sting games include far more superiour graphics and sound, but Golden Sun was released five years ago and still plays strong.
**Addendum**: To be continued with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga e.a.!

### Goblin Princes are Ugly
Am I the only one wondering what the heck the lead artist ate the day he **created** Goblins? Uh oh, did I spell this wrong? Not really. In Gobliiins, the prequel, you can control three Goblin creatures, hence the three 'i'-s. This game comes with two wacky dudes and the sequel with only one.
Every year an article pops up about Adventure games and the death of the genre and every year a fantastic game gets released to counter this myth. Sadly, only a few of those games are really worth playing trough. That's why I'd like to take a look at the past with you to games wich are worth mentionning. How did this genre fare in the DOS era, when pixels ruled the world and nobody shouted like hell **oh no these graphics suck!**. Retro is in.

A delicate child snatched from it's Home!

Please be kindly reminded of the legendary LucasArts adventure games wich still circulate in the second hand market for +$60 new. Too bad some abandoned software is still ESA Protected. Coktel Vision, the adventure game developêr of the **Goblins** series, already produced quality adventure data in the mid-1980s. The Goblins need your help puzzling trough various open ended stages. In this version, you'll get Fingus, the wannabe-intelligent but total-not-funny goblin, and Winkle the dumb-but-so-funny dude. You will need to combine their efforts to achieve some items wich can then be used in another stage, and so on: classic adventure gameplay indeed.
### Progress trough the Game

What's up, old guys. I want that bottle!

Let's talk a bit about the story. The **Prince Buffoon** has sadly been kidnapped! What will happen now? Fingus and Winkle will have to retrieve the prince by all means - alive or... well, alive. Let's imagine the following scene: two old people are sitting on a bench by a big tree. Behind them, an empty bottle. You'll need the bottle to water the flowers, wich you'll need to... Do something else, let's not spoil it. How do you successfully nab that bottle? Let Winkle do something stupid, the old guys laugh like hell and won't pay attention on Fingus. Point & Click: nothing more, nothing less. With a bunch humoristic tricks and scenes added. Winkle will for instane literally **'eat**' your valuable items if he's hungry, so you can't just solve each puzzle using the same goblin. Woah, that's crazy, good sir! No, that's an intresting twist.
### Kind of stuck here, a little help?

A gaint, a dog and a Chicken. Hmm...

There is always the cheesy and easy way to finish adventure games: scan the whole scene with your mouse cursor and pick up anything you are able to use. Combine everything with everything and try to interact with every usable object lying around. Should you think 'aha, I will try to match logical objects with each other', think again. Goblins is a whacky game and the puzzles are sometimes too wacky for it's own good. Ever tried catching a fairy with honey sirup? Or getting matches via a big bear carpet? The right or wrong animations are very well done, but it will get frustrating after a dozen tries.
Luckily, you'll get a couple **Jokers** troughout the game wich you can access via the top main menu. It will briefly explain what each goblin should pick up and do in the scene you're in. You'll only have a few of those jokers and once used you won't be able to access them again so be careful. Sometimes the goblins themselves try to put you on the right track by saying something like 'maybe I should do x and y?'. Don't expect those hints in the later scenes tough. Yes, cheaters can simply look at GameFaqs, hmpf.
### Conclusion
Gobliins 2 is a game wich suffers from the well-known age complex: pixels. If you are a die-hard 2D retro kind of person, knock your socks off. If you like to play UT2004 on 1400x1050, please ignore the two floppy disks. Yes! It's **that** big. Oh wait, you can also play it via DOSBox or even via the excellent ScummVM interpreter. If your future Windows Vista install will be able to run those packets, that is.

In the year 1999 the then-existing company New World Computing released version seven of their honored Might & Magic series, subtitled "**For Blood and Honor**". Most Might & Magic [-(MM)-] fans were quite happy since VII is by many people marked as (at least one of) the best in the series. Sadly, even New World Computing disappeared in 2003 and Ubisoft the gaint looking evil company bought all NWC rights. The Might & Magic VII Publisher, 3DO also closed their doors. What's up with that? Is this some kind of bad disease, creating a brilliant game no-one cares about and thus nobody likes to play except hard-core fans? Let's not try to blame it on **EA** again.
Anyway, welcome to a world of furious Power, angry Magic, dirty Politics and above all: a big **pixel fest**!
### What's up with this Interface?

Strolling trough the biggest city.

Don't forget to breathe while watching the videos or viewing the screenshots. Let's be blunt: **The game is ugly as hell**. That's a fact and there is no review in this world which will change it, not even this one. But all Might & Magic games in the long running series suffered from this bad point. The game itself is only playable at 640x480, like Planescape: Torment. Not that it matters much once the game grabs your throat and you are addicted. New World Computing finally tried in version Might and Magic IX to **tighten up** the graphics by using the No One Lives Forever [-(Lich-Tech)-] engine, but on the way they apparently forgot to adjust the controls to a First Person Roleplaying game instead of a shooter...
What has version VII to offer if you are still playing VI? A lot, really. All principles of past **FPRPG** games are based on two game series: Might & Magic and [Wizardry](/tags/wizardry8), wich both started in the DOS era. Many spin-offs and rip-offs failed to deliver where M&M and Wiz games stood out. This alone is reason enough to support NWC **(Too late! Mwhahaha! *Sob*)** and buy the game in budget edition. You'll be rewared with one of the best New World Computing games except a random Heroes of Might & Magic game.
### Huge Possibilities

Beautiful loading screens.

Like many other RPG games, you've been given a **lot** of choices during the course ànd creation of the game. A fresh reminder: the Might & Magic games play like a turn-based First Person RPG, just like [Wizardry](/tags/wizardry8). You can switch to turn-based mode any time by pressing the ENTER key. At the bottom of the game interface, you'll see your four main character portraits, wich you'll have to create all by yourself. Additional NPCs may join you but will only function as a **modifier**: for example hiring a travelling locksmith will grant you a whopping **'5%**' bonus to your lock pick skills, at the cost of a set amounth of gold or a base percentage on the gold you stumble upon during your numberous adventures.
There are four races available: Goblin (strongest and quick), Elf (weak but smart), human (jack of all trades, master of none) and dwarf (stronger and vital). Combine those bad guys with no less than nine classes and you have a perfect team to save the M&M world. There's a mok, thief, paladin, ranger, sorcerer, knight, druid, cleric and archer waiting for you and you can combine each class with each race. Obviously the spell casting goblin will have trouble dealing out the maximum amounth of damage, compared to an elf sorcerer.
### Student and Master

My druid's spellbook.

Every character can specialize in his class. This means your newbie monk can kick quite a bit of butt as a **Master** monk later in the game, also enabling him to cast Body Magic (in a lesser degreen than a Cleric of course, but still). Aquiring those titles will require you to finish a difficult task near the end of the game. A sorcerer for instance can choose to become an archmage or a lich - the light and dark sides of the sorcerer. Each side has special abilities: casting powerfull undead spells or big godly ones like Mass Heal, the choice is up to you.
Choices - if you like to consider and eventually make them, this game was written for you. Let me give you a nice example. At the beginning of the game on newbie island, you'll get a quest which requires you to find a musical instrument, and only one girl on the island carries one. Nope, don't bother looking in every chest because there is no other instrument available. The **nice looking** girl asks 500 gold for it (a criminal price at that point) so how will you get the lute? A sneaky backstab usually does the trick, but if you mess up the guards will cut you down merciless. Wich accidently happened in the video, hehe. Sorry about that.
### Skill Progress

The inventory screen of my thief.

In contrast to Baldur's Gate and co. where you are out of luck if you find a shiny weapon you cannot use, or to Wizardry where your skills progress as you use the weapon type, you can "**buy**" weapon type skills in Might & Magic games. If you didn't choose to pick the sword skill at the character creation window, you can still learn it from various NPCs like weapon merchants in the game (for a **fair** price of course). After you level up you can pump points into a skill and if these values are high enough you can upgrade the skill level. Only certain classes can get progressively better at a certain skill: Paladins only can Grandmaster the **repair item** skill. Every skill has four levels: basic, expert, master and grandmaster. An expert dagger character can equip two daggers at once and a grandmaster dagger thief adds additional bonus damage to his attacks. To get a skill upgrade you will have to find the appropriate teacher though. Trainers are sperad across the whole M&M VII universe, but luckily the game records the locations once you've visited them.
### Let's Play a card Game.

Acromage, the card game.

Imagine that. I'm strollig trough the biggest city in the game, searching for a tavern to fill up food supplies. Once inside, the waiter tells me a new card game has become quite popular in the taverns across the country. You can win a lof of money so I'm in. It's called "**Acromage**". He even bet I couldn't win in all taverns, hah, bring it on old man! "**Read Rules?**" Nah, we're hardcore! Damn, what the hell are all those cards and what do they do? Uh-oh, I somehow recognize all this - there was this one time I occasionally played **Magic the Gathering**...
You and the PC have both a tower of a set height and you'll want to bring your enemies tower to zero or raise your own to a set maximum (varies per town). There are three types of cards: red ones (requires bricks), green ones (requires beasts), and blue ones (requires gems). Each round, your resources regenerate depending on your base material. By playing a card of a certain color, the action of the card gets executed and the resources are recalculated. For example, a "**Troll Trainer**" is a green card wich increases my tower with 3. I play the card, pay "**5 Beast**" and end my round. You'll get the hang of it, because that little card game is soo addictive!
Acromage is also included in future Might & Magic games (at least in [VIII](/tags/might-and-magic-viii))!
### Conclusion
It's easy to see Might & Magic VII has everything a Roleplaying loving gamer is looking for. "But why should we choose VII?" - because it has a perfect balance between skills, storyline, **looks** (Urgh!) and other points next to its predecessors and successors. Another word of advice: by all means, **Avoid IX**! Please don't tell me I never warned you.
### Bonus material: gameplay video
These have been dubbed in Dutch for maximum hilarity.

Introduction to the cleric/ranger

Since little non-playable and joinable characters are as good in healing as Viconia is, you might end up creating your own cleric. Especially if you intend to play as a neutral or good party. Remember Viconia and Keldorn both at the sime time in your party is asking for trouble: either one of the two will leave or they might even fight in later stages.

So, what’s the worst part about the cleric, in general? He can even wear full plate mail and equip quite a few damaging weapons (maces, flails and more). But yes, the cleric lacks overall melee skills: you can’t specialize as much in weapons as a fighter (obviously), you can’t effectively dual wield, etc. Dual classing the cleric is a popular solution, mostly fighter/cleric or cleric/fighter. But! If you dualclass your ranger very early into a cleric (I’m talking about lvl7), you have access to all divine spells ànd all high level ranger spells as your character progresses throughout the game. Woah. This may sound like a cheesy and dirty trick. In fact, it pretty much is, so if you don’t really like this, I suggest you still keep on reading and dual class your cleric with a class of your own choice.

The cleric/ranger combination actually works pretty well: high wisdom is needed for both classes to cast spells. Dex and Str are very useful, especially the first one. Don’t build it up to 18 wearing plate mail though as it dismisses your evade bonus completely. There are good leather armors later in the game (if you’ve installed Throne of Bhaal: the obvious dungeon & further upgrades)

Basic Progression guide

Start with a Ranger

Creating a ranger gives you the advantage to choose additional weapon specializations. In this guide, we are going to create a dual wielding mace/flail character. Don’t pick non-blunt weapons because the cleric cannot use any of those (sword, katana, … but also no (cross)bow). If you really really need to build a ranged weapon too, there’s nothing much left except the slingshot. Remember, we’ll have plenty of ranged attack spells so no worries here.

Statistics

STR: Remember frost gaint belt e.a. - not too high. Max 14

DEX: If you’re going to wear full plate - no more than 12. Else (highly adviced!) as much as possible.

CON: Between STR and DEX. 16 or 14 is okay for fortitude save throws. We do have (too many) heal spells.

INT: No need for this. Might even drop to 8 as we need other stats.

WIS: 18. Nothing less, most important stat.

CHA: Depends on your play style. I’d pick 10 or 12, the charmed ring found in Athkatla Circus will set CHA to 18.

While playing the game, there is nothing much to follow or remember, just play it like you would play any regular cleric with a hybrid class. Dual class at level 7 to get the hightest level spells as a cleric. You’ll automatically be able to cast all highest level druid spells thanks to the ranger class. Isn’t that amazing! Remember to heal regulary since your low level character will probably have some difficulties in the beginning of the game. Once you start gaining level 3⁄4 and up spells you’re powerful enough to take on most monsters with the help of your party members.

Character Equipment

Weapons enough to use! Since most other party members use a different class of (melee or ranged) weapons, you have the freedom to fully claim all maces/flails and morning stars for yourself. Try to get the Flail of Ages as soon as possible to +3 since the extra elemental damage helps quite a lot to certain otherwise immune enemies. An undead crushing mace and a skull crusher are always handy, equip when needed. It’s generally not needed to grab your slingshot as a backup weapon: use buff spells or ranged magic.

If you’ve installed Throne of Bhaal or the bonus merchants, you can get your hands on a nice leather armor quite soon. Shadow armor is always good (AC -1) and still one of the best leather armors there are in the game. But most of the time your thief or another character will claim those equipment pieces. If you can’t find any decent set, temporary equip good plate mail. Remember to switch soon as it reduces your DEX bonus and completely nullifies your hard work to buff up the character.

Buy a frost belt/girdle from one of the bonus merchants or find one of the many available. It’ll help inrease your damage output while swinging the dual maces or flails. If you plan on equipping another belt, you should’ve built your character different since 14 STR is not nearly enough. Of course, this build is quite melee minded, adjust as you see fit.

Important Spell Pics

As a heavily melee oriented character, you’ll want to primary equip yourself with buff and shield spells. That does not mean other spells are less important, they’re just not as much used. You do have a backup mage or two as primary magic damage dealers, right? A typical encounter using your favourite cross-class (at low level): cast protection from evil 12’ radius, cast faith armor, use your draw upon holy might innate ability (if present) and rush into melee range to protect your weaker party members. If things get hot, pull back and start casting heal wounds to further support other members. The cleric/ranger can be used as a tank, but shouldn’t since he or she has powerful protective spells to help the party survive.

That being said, buffing also includes offensive buffs such as the high level Blade barrier. The spell Sanctuary renders you complete invisible and prevents enemies from targetting you. This gives you more than enough time to stay in melee range, damage enemies with your barrier ànd further support the party by healing/buffing/attacking. Your most important aid spells include Lesser/greater restoration against those annoying level draining vampires, mass heal obviously, defensive harmony, …

The druid divine spell picks are merged with the cleric’s. Luckily, as a cleric or divine spellcaster, you do not need to “pick” spells as you level up (like the Mage does). This means you have access to all spells of all levels once properly levelled up. The druid spells are mostly offensive (insect swarm) and summons (fire elementals, pixies, demons and more). Don’t forget to cast protection from evil first or the creature will turn hostile after a few rounds.

With a small group of Forgotten Realms fans at Shrimprefuge, we decided to take on the Baldur’s Gate world using only one character (hence “solo”). For most of us, this will be the first solo run so I figured we (and other readers) could use a report writeup as the characters progress through the game.
Before picking the class bard and kit blade, I did some basic research on how to play and which strategy should work - and which won’t. The most resourceful report was definatly andijvieschotel ’s one from the BioWare forums. Thanks to him, I managed to get through some very otherwise tough portions of the game, especially in the beginning. Let’s get on with it, shall we.

Impressive GBA RPGs

Since the Nintendo DS has been released a couple of years ago, many game related websites predicted a quick and painful death for the Gameboy Advance. Thankfully, none of those predictions made it into reality since the GBA library is still steadily growing, although a whole lot slower than in 2002. Nintendo’s smart marketing ideas enabled the DS to play GBA cartridges which indirectly prolongs the overall GBA’s life. Therefore, a lot of potentially great games have been released but mainly ignored in favor of less entertaining DS games. So let’s take a look at the most impressive GBA Roleplaying or Strategy games!

Of course no console or handheld’s RPG collection is truly complete without any Final Fantasy spin-off or port.

But you can’t play it yet on your GBA unless you’re Japanese. Final Fantasy V includes a complex job system first introduced in III, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. You can swap jobs and keep certain special abilities, this enables you to build the ultimate magic swordsman. Good enough for more than 30 hours of handheld Roleplaying goodness. If you’re looking for a handheld FF game, V is the game to get.

Fire Emblem and Sacred Stones on the GBA. Thank you Intelligent Systems!

Next up, the popularity gaining Fire Emblem series from Intelligent Systems. You should remember Intelligent from the more than excellent Advance Wars Gameboy Advance Turn-based games. Fire Emblem is the equivalent in a, well, more Fantasy-ish setting. In FE, you guide a devoted team of warriors, priests, mages and more to victory and reclaim the land (or cleanse the evil spirits, heh). If you’re looking for more gameplay related information you should read the Fire Emblem Wikipedia entry.

Two Fire Emblem games made it to the Gameboy Advance, and even Europe (woah! We get something good…) and one recently to the Nintendo Gamecube. Because of the overall lacking Strategy RPG games on the GBA, FE was more than welcome and it shows. Both games are excellent and very well suited for mobile gaming, although some missions tend to be quite long. Thank you sleep mode. Sacred stones is arguably an overall better game due to the small class tweaks but it’s a lot harder than the first GBA game.

Developing your main assault team is one of the highlights of the game. It’s so satisfactional to transform a regular soldier into a sword master +33% critical hits? Hell yeah! But watch out though: once a character dies, you won’t be seeing that one in the future: once dead always gone. Choosing between both games can be difficult, but I’d be safe to say both are very good GBA picks. If you never played any Fire Emblem game before, pick up the regular one (Fire Emblem, without the subtitle. In Japan, more than 4 FE games were released on SNES and sadly never translated).

Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

One of the underdog highlights of the whole Gameboy Advance library is without a doubt Atlus’ Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis. Before we continue to hail the game, let’s straighten up one thing: No, it’s not better than Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together. But yes, it’s one of the best time-soaking GBA games. Especially if you love turn-based Strategy RPGs or like to customize your characters. Sadly, the game was never published in Europe, but I doubt that would dramatically increase the game sales. It’s one of those freaky hardcore in-it or lose-it games.

That’s also an advantage of course.

And then there’s Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (FFTA). For instance, after entering a battle, there’s a card which says “Forbidden Bladed weapons”. If someone (including the enemy) attacks using a sword or katana, you’ll get a yellow card. After 2 yellow cards you get thrown into jail and your buddies can go bribe you out. Fascinatingly frustrating, especially on missions where enemies are beasts and there’s a “Forbidden beast damage” card.

Not only that, FFTA is very very easy compared to Tactics Ogre. And the music gets so repetitive after a while, argh. Oh yeah, and the game lacks a good story line. Pick Tactics Ogre above it all day long, but if you’re hungry for more, FFTA might be for you. Or maybe not.

Yggdra Union and Riviera: The Promised Land

Sting’s GBA debut, Riviera: The Promised Land, is in it’s heart a Strategy Roleplaying game. But it utilizes some very weird and uncommon gameplay mechanics - that’s not directly a bad thing. Once on a mission, you travel through many set scenes without directly controlling the protagonist. How’s that? Say you landed on a deep forest. There are 4 “actions” to do: Look at grass, Go North/East and Open Chest.

Once you’ve entered the battlefield, you can assign up to four members to fight (north/east/south/west) and up to four items to fight with. Every time you use an item, the item’s durability counter decreases by one. If the counter hits zero, the item is gone forever. That sounds quite awkward and it really is: don’t directly use all your powerful items before any boss encounter! The bad part about the whole item stuff is you can only carry 30 items at a time and you cannot sell any of them! In towns, navigation is the same as the missions, with unlimited action points.

On the other hand, there’s the very recent Yggdra Union: We’ll Never Fight Alone Strategy RPG game, also from Sting, published by our God Atlus. The game is a Tactical RPG in the vein of the Fire Emblem games, with an overhead view of a 2D map, managing miniture versions of your units. However, aside from the map view, it is quite different. A card system dictating your movement and potential skills plays into both enemy and ally turns, as well as the “Union” formation system, in which massive battles can take place between several platoons.

Both games are quite different than traditional SRPG handheld or console games and both games have the same extremely high quality audio and amazingly done sprite work. If you’re looking for something different than Fire Emblem, but still utilizing the same core thoughts, definitely consider Yggdra Union.

Golden Sun 1 and 2: the Lost Age.

Camelot’s attempt on a traditional/retro console Roleplaying game was very Enthusiasticly received back in 2001. Golden Sun is in essence a contemporary presentation of the traditional console role-playing game formula, where the player guides a cast of four characters as they journey through a fantasy-themed game world and interact with various Non playing Characters. Golden Sun also “features” random battles (good or not), just like the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series. One of the strongest points of the Golden Sun series is the stronly embedded puzzle aspect of the game.

Many of these puzzles revolve heavily around the usage of the games resident form of magic spells, “Psynergy.”.

Many praised the game’s vibrant graphics, high-quality sound, and varied, refined RPG gameplay, with particular optimism on the Djinn-based gameplay system and Battle aspect. Of course all Sting games include far more superiour graphics and sound, but Golden Sun was released five years ago and still plays strong.

Addendum: To be continued with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga e.a.!

Gobliins 2: the Review

Goblin Princes are Ugly

Am I the only one wondering what the heck the lead artist ate the day he created Goblins? Uh oh, did I spell this wrong? Not really. In Gobliiins, the prequel, you can control three Goblin creatures, hence the three ‘i’-s. This game comes with two wacky dudes and the sequel with only one.

Every year an article pops up about Adventure games and the death of the genre and every year a fantastic game gets released to counter this myth. Sadly, only a few of those games are really worth playing trough. That’s why I’d like to take a look at the past with you to games wich are worth mentionning. How did this genre fare in the DOS era, when pixels ruled the world and nobody shouted like hell oh no these graphics suck!. Retro is in.

A delicate child snatched from it’s Home!

Please be kindly reminded of the legendary LucasArts adventure games wich still circulate in the second hand market for +$60 new. Too bad some abandoned software is still ESA Protected. Coktel Vision, the adventure game developêr of the Goblins series, already produced quality adventure data in the mid-1980s. The Goblins need your help puzzling trough various open ended stages. In this version, you’ll get Fingus, the wannabe-intelligent but total-not-funny goblin, and Winkle the dumb-but-so-funny dude. You will need to combine their efforts to achieve some items wich can then be used in another stage, and so on: classic adventure gameplay indeed.

Progress trough the Game

What’s up, old guys. I want that bottle!

Let’s talk a bit about the story. The Prince Buffoon has sadly been kidnapped! What will happen now? Fingus and Winkle will have to retrieve the prince by all means - alive or… well, alive. Let’s imagine the following scene: two old people are sitting on a bench by a big tree. Behind them, an empty bottle. You’ll need the bottle to water the flowers, wich you’ll need to… Do something else, let’s not spoil it. How do you successfully nab that bottle? Let Winkle do something stupid, the old guys laugh like hell and won’t pay attention on Fingus. Point & Click: nothing more, nothing less. With a bunch humoristic tricks and scenes added. Winkle will for instane literally ‘eat’ your valuable items if he’s hungry, so you can’t just solve each puzzle using the same goblin. Woah, that’s crazy, good sir! No, that’s an intresting twist.

Kind of stuck here, a little help?

A gaint, a dog and a Chicken. Hmm…

There is always the cheesy and easy way to finish adventure games: scan the whole scene with your mouse cursor and pick up anything you are able to use. Combine everything with everything and try to interact with every usable object lying around. Should you think ‘aha, I will try to match logical objects with each other’, think again. Goblins is a whacky game and the puzzles are sometimes too wacky for it’s own good. Ever tried catching a fairy with honey sirup? Or getting matches via a big bear carpet? The right or wrong animations are very well done, but it will get frustrating after a dozen tries.

Luckily, you’ll get a couple Jokers troughout the game wich you can access via the top main menu. It will briefly explain what each goblin should pick up and do in the scene you’re in. You’ll only have a few of those jokers and once used you won’t be able to access them again so be careful. Sometimes the goblins themselves try to put you on the right track by saying something like ‘maybe I should do x and y?’. Don’t expect those hints in the later scenes tough. Yes, cheaters can simply look at GameFaqs, hmpf.

Conclusion

Gobliins 2 is a game wich suffers from the well-known age complex: pixels. If you are a die-hard 2D retro kind of person, knock your socks off. If you like to play UT2004 on 1400x1050, please ignore the two floppy disks. Yes! It’s that big. Oh wait, you can also play it via DOSBox or even via the excellent ScummVM interpreter. If your future Windows Vista install will be able to run those packets, that is.

Goblin Princes are Ugly Am I the only one wondering what the heck the lead artist ate the day he created Goblins? Uh oh, did I spell this wrong? Not really. In Gobliiins, the prequel, you can control three Goblin creatures, hence the three ‘i’-s. This game comes with two wacky dudes and the sequel with only one.
Every year an article pops up about Adventure games and the death of the genre and every year a fantastic game gets released to counter this myth.

Might and Magic VII: the Review

In the year 1999 the then-existing company New World Computing released version seven of their honored Might & Magic series, subtitled “For Blood and Honor”. What’s up with that? Is this some kind of bad disease, creating a brilliant game no-one cares about and thus nobody likes to play except hard-core fans? Let’s not try to blame it on EA again.

Anyway, welcome to a world of furious Power, angry Magic, dirty Politics and above all: a big pixel fest!

What’s up with this Interface?

Strolling trough the biggest city.

Don’t forget to breathe while watching the videos or viewing the screenshots. Let’s be blunt: The game is ugly as hell. That’s a fact and there is no review in this world which will change it, not even this one. But all Might & Magic games in the long running series suffered from this bad point. The game itself is only playable at 640x480, like Planescape: Torment. Not that it matters much once the game grabs your throat and you are addicted. New World Computing finally tried in version Might and Magic IX to tighten up the graphics by using the No One Lives Forever [-(Lich-Tech)-] engine, but on the way they apparently forgot to adjust the controls to a First Person Roleplaying game instead of a shooter…

What has version VII to offer if you are still playing VI? A lot, really. All principles of past FPRPG games are based on two game series: Might & Magic and Wizardry, wich both started in the DOS era. Many spin-offs and rip-offs failed to deliver where M&M and Wiz games stood out. This alone is reason enough to support NWC (Too late! Mwhahaha! Sob) and buy the game in budget edition. You’ll be rewared with one of the best New World Computing games except a random Heroes of Might & Magic game.

Huge Possibilities

Beautiful loading screens.

Like many other RPG games, you’ve been given a lot of choices during the course ànd creation of the game. A fresh reminder: the Might & Magic games play like a turn-based First Person RPG, just like Wizardry. You can switch to turn-based mode any time by pressing the ENTER key. At the bottom of the game interface, you’ll see your four main character portraits, wich you’ll have to create all by yourself. Additional NPCs may join you but will only function as a modifier: for example hiring a travelling locksmith will grant you a whopping ‘5%’ bonus to your lock pick skills, at the cost of a set amounth of gold or a base percentage on the gold you stumble upon during your numberous adventures.

There are four races available: Goblin (strongest and quick), Elf (weak but smart), human (jack of all trades, master of none) and dwarf (stronger and vital). Combine those bad guys with no less than nine classes and you have a perfect team to save the M&M world. There’s a mok, thief, paladin, ranger, sorcerer, knight, druid, cleric and archer waiting for you and you can combine each class with each race. Obviously the spell casting goblin will have trouble dealing out the maximum amounth of damage, compared to an elf sorcerer.

Student and Master

My druid’s spellbook.

Every character can specialize in his class. This means your newbie monk can kick quite a bit of butt as a Master monk later in the game, also enabling him to cast Body Magic (in a lesser degreen than a Cleric of course, but still).

At the beginning of the game on newbie island, you’ll get a quest which requires you to find a musical instrument, and only one girl on the island carries one. Nope, don’t bother looking in every chest because there is no other instrument available. The nice looking girl asks 500 gold for it (a criminal price at that point) so how will you get the lute? A sneaky backstab usually does the trick, but if you mess up the guards will cut you down merciless. Wich accidently happened in the video, hehe. Sorry about that.

Skill Progress

The inventory screen of my thief.

In contrast to Baldur’s Gate and co. where you are out of luck if you find a shiny weapon you cannot use, or to Wizardry where your skills progress as you use the weapon type, you can “buy” weapon type skills in Might & Magic games. If you didn’t choose to pick the sword skill at the character creation window, you can still learn it from various NPCs like weapon merchants in the game (for a fair price of course). After you level up you can pump points into a skill and if these values are high enough you can upgrade the skill level. Only certain classes can get progressively better at a certain skill: Paladins only can Grandmaster the repair item skill. Every skill has four levels: basic, expert, master and grandmaster. An expert dagger character can equip two daggers at once and a grandmaster dagger thief adds additional bonus damage to his attacks. To get a skill upgrade you will have to find the appropriate teacher though. Trainers are sperad across the whole M&M VII universe, but luckily the game records the locations once you’ve visited them.

Let’s Play a card Game.

Acromage, the card game.

Imagine that. I’m strollig trough the biggest city in the game, searching for a tavern to fill up food supplies. Once inside, the waiter tells me a new card game has become quite popular in the taverns across the country. You can win a lof of money so I’m in. It’s called “Acromage”. He even bet I couldn’t win in all taverns, hah, bring it on old man! “Read Rules?” Nah, we’re hardcore! Damn, what the hell are all those cards and what do they do? Uh-oh, I somehow recognize all this - there was this one time I occasionally played Magic the Gathering…

You and the PC have both a tower of a set height and you’ll want to bring your enemies tower to zero or raise your own to a set maximum (varies per town). There are three types of cards: red ones (requires bricks), green ones (requires beasts), and blue ones (requires gems). Each round, your resources regenerate depending on your base material. By playing a card of a certain color, the action of the card gets executed and the resources are recalculated. For example, a “Troll Trainer” is a green card wich increases my tower with 3. I play the card, pay “5 Beast” and end my round. You’ll get the hang of it, because that little card game is soo addictive!
Acromage is also included in future Might & Magic games (at least in VIII)!

Conclusion

It’s easy to see Might & Magic VII has everything a Roleplaying loving gamer is looking for. “But why should we choose VII?” - because it has a perfect balance between skills, storyline, looks (Urgh!) and other points next to its predecessors and successors. Another word of advice: by all means, Avoid IX! Please don’t tell me I never warned you.

Introduction to the cleric/ranger Since little non-playable and joinable characters are as good in healing as Viconia is, you might end up creating your own cleric. Especially if you intend to play as a neutral or good party. Remember Viconia and Keldorn both at the sime time in your party is asking for trouble: either one of the two will leave or they might even fight in later stages.

An NPC is basically a character not controlled by the player, who can be of great importance during the many main or side quests. NPCs vary in importance and placement: they can either be annoying and usesless or interesting and useful. Many Roleplaying games only give the most important NPCs something useful to say or do. Talking to other characters makes no sense since they only answer with one of the standard sentences: “oh, you’re the princess!

On a side note, it’s sad to see the JA series become more and more popular thanks to mass download methods like Steam, after the virtual death of the company itself.
In the year 1999 the then-existing company New World Computing released version seven of their honored Might & Magic series, subtitled “For Blood and Honor”. Most Might & Magic [-(MM)-] fans were quite happy since VII is by many people marked as (at least one of) the best in the series. Sadly, even New World Computing disappeared in 2003 and Ubisoft the gaint looking evil company bought all NWC rights.
