# About the Codex
Hi, I'm Jefklak/[Wouter](https://brainbaking.com/about/) and you're looking at "Jefklak's Codex", a dedicated and highly opinionated website about nostalgic games. The word **nostalgic** should be emphasized here. I grew up with a Gameboy between my hands and PC RPG games burnt into my retina. That healthy cocktail left a lasting impression - and netted me the Codex (and glasses).

+
+Only the new and young generation of gamers might not be familiar with Apogee Software - that is, until one has read the article. Apogee, the legacy of shareware PC games. I remember everything like it was yesterday! Impatiently receiving my first oversized floppy disk containing a demo version of Cosmo's little adventures, racing through the first few levels of Duke Nukem, defeating way too much zombies in Monster Bash, capturing the first castle in Mystic Towers, ... The video game company literally created the shareware distribution model using various monthly subscribed magazines and one free floppy which was without a doubt numberous times passed on.
+Apogee Software not only published excellent DOS (platform) games from various companies like Micro F/X Software or Scenario, but also created their own brilliant spin-offs or even whole separate branches. The perfect example is of course Duke Nukem, I'm quite certain Duke is one of the most well-known gaming franchises/character of the entire PC gaming world. Besides the Duke Apogee also created a few enjoyable platformers as well as shooters like Bio Menace, Crystal Caves and Rise of the triad. You can consult a full overview including release years at Wikipedia.

+
JAM Productions' Blake Stone uses id's Wolf3D Engine.
+
+### How Apogee triumphed
+
+Apogee was established in 1987 together with the early release of Kingdom of Kroz, which used funky ASCII art as a graphics layer. To distribute and promote the published games, Apogee did not follow the traditional shareware model (giving away the full game and asking customers to pay if they like it). Instead, most well-known Apogee games were cut into three main episode parts. Part one was usually distributed freely on a demo floppy or diskette. When you finished episode one and hungered for more, you could mail order the other two. Using this method also enabled you to receive bonus disks, for instance new versions of demos without waiting until your favourite magazine restocked, or even receiving a few full games (all three episodes) for free as a thank you. Back in the day, I paid for Hocus Pocus but received Mystic Towers and the sidescroller Raptor for free! That's simply amazing. This distribution method was called the Apogee Model during that period.
+
+Virtually every game you wanted to play was published or developed by Apogee in the '90s. Do you like shooters? No problem, play Wolfenstein or one of the hundred semi-successfull spin-offs like Blake Stone or later on even Rise of the triad which also used the Wolf3D engine - highly enhanched of course. It was supposed to compete with big hits like Doom, but Doom's height difference maps gained far more populairty. That does not mean RoTT was a completely bad game - no single one ever touched by Apogee was.
+
+**Addendum** - Thanks to jgkspsx for pointing out RoTT does have height differences, and the development team decided in the end not to use the Wolf3D eninge after all. Read the full 3DRealms article on Rise of the Triad here. Sorry for that!

Duke, the ever-popular platform game which kindly ripped concepts from Mega Man e.a.
+
+### How Apogee failed
+
+Besides shooters, the biggest deal of Apogee games consisted of traditional platforming principes. From Apogee's own Duke series to Alien Carnage (a.k.a. Halloween Harry), Hocus Pocus or Monster Bash. I grew up playing those games over and over again and that is bascially one of the many reasons I'm writing this very article. Like all faithful hard-core platform fans in '90, I knew (or rather still know) all Duke or Cosmo levels by heart, even if the games were not that hard to complete.
+
+Nowadays traditional 2D platform games are hardly recognized or accepted in the PC gaming world. You'll occasionally find one or two games devoted to an ancient Apogee game, just like this article, or a couple of independant developers trying to ressurect the genre. Besides the increasingly popular Nintendo DS, there's almost no system to date were platform games are popular. This is the very reason why Apogee has become 3D Realms. Initially Apogee wanted to split up the brand name for each genre, making each new game identifiable based on which brand it belonged to. Sadly, during the late 1990s the once-popular genres like Platform games or sidescrollers slowly died, and so dit the publisher's idea. Only 3D realms remained, developing and publishing Duke Nukem 3D and other recent games, featuring a 3D engine. good riddance, pixels.

Overview
+
+
All right, you want yourself a cool character with even cooler guns. The problem is: technology is not that easy in Arcanum. Especially all the different schemes, guns, carrying the bullets, and so on. Would you like to make a backup plan, like throwing or a bow? Or would you just like to grab yourself an axe and whack the enemy when you run out of bullets? Or would you go running and rely on your followers? And are you going to raise INT to 18 to get the "doctorate" schools? Will you get DEX high enough to dodge most blows from enemies who come too close? Too many questions and too less answers... Well, one thing is for sure: you've come to the right place!

+
The statistics of a good Gunslinger
+
+
A basic stat ranges from 1 and up, with 20 as the maximum for a normal human character. Reaching 20 in a stat will also give you access to bonus resistances/damage/other modifiers. You can raise your character's stats by using the Character Points she gains during the game, at a rate of one point per level gained. Increasing a stat one step costs one character point. Having a positive racial modifier to a stat will allow your character to exceed the usual cap of 20, something that cannot be done with positive modifiers gained from backgrounds or equipment. However, negative modifiers due to race, background and/or equipment can all prevent you from reaching 20 - so choose carefully.
+
+
Strength: <= 8 So, you've made yourself several characters which didn't rely on STR too much. Well, let me assure you: the gunslinger is not really an exception either. Why should you waste CPs on STR when you can 1) take several packmules like Sogg Meat Hogg and 2) won't rely on close-combat damage anyway? (So the STR bonus modifier won't matter). Of course, if you plan on taking a LOT of bullets, potions, armor and bombs with you, and you'll have the backup-close-combat way, don't overlook this one. Otherwise, it's not really worth raising above 8 or so.
+
Dexerity: <= 16 DEX is the most important stat skill for most characters. Close combat, as well as throwing, bow, dodge, pick pocket, lockpick, and more all rely on this skill. Don't skip it at all! But don't forget either our primary stats are PE and INT. If you don't want to put 2 CPs into electricity to make yourself 2 charged rings, try to keep DEX as high as possible. More speed is nice, and increased AC is also good! You won't need too high speed, but prowling from a distance and shooting more times per round with your sniper is always welcome, isn't it.
+
Constitution: <= 10 Same as STR, basically. Constitution only increases the health points, which could be nice. But since we DON'T want to get hit, we'll skip this also. Besides, 65 CPs aren't that much. Also, generally even a sneaky thief won't need too much CON either. Strange Geoffrey has 20 CON - this might be a bug of some kind?
+
Beauty: <= 9 Beauty is a stat I *ALWAYS* skip, simply because there are too much skills in the game with too few points to spend. Why should you be "beautiful" anway, except for better prices in the shops? Besides, haggle depends on charisma and not beauty! And if there's a person who doesn't like us at all, we'll just put a bullet trough their head and they'll shut up, hehe. s
+
Intelligence: <= 19 Major problem: to reach a school "doctorate" you'll need to have an intelligence of 19 or higher. That means, creating the elephant gun yourself will result in a BUNCH of useless invested points into INT. There are other possibilities, like "Essence of Intellect", the potion. Use it, quickly learn the schematic and assemble your gun befores the potion weres out and you're done. Another alternative is stealing/buying/begging for every single gun in-game. It's your choise... 15 INT is never wasted, but I wouldn't go up too much on this.
+
Perception: <= 20 The most important stat for the revolver wielding char. Simply because this & firearms gives you increased changes to hit, to damage and range. Plus, you'll need a minimum PE to wield most guns, and prowling requires perception. Theoretically, PE 18 suffices. But 20 is nice, 2 more points and some nice bonus skill unlocked. Not that you'll use it too much, but hey.
+
Willpower: <= 8 Willpower is only usefull for wizards. Period.
+
Charisma: <= 12 Charisma is nice because 1) you would like to have 3 followers: Jayna, the healer, Magnus, the co-creator and of course some kind of half-orge meat shield and carrier. And 2) you won't have too many problems haggling and getting all the money you need for your inventions. Also, you will be able to persuade in most conversations, which is quite usefull. Especially the half-orc NPC which you can release from his service. If your CHA is higher than 9 in Shrouded Hills, Sogg will join you. Take him along with you, early in the game you will need one of these!
+
Ooh, I crafted myself a Nice gun. Teehee!
+
+
The Best Races
+
+
Humans Humans are the most common race in the world of Arcanum. They make up the majority of the population in the cities. Humans seem to be able to do well at both technology and magick. Not a first pick, but for pure roleplaying reasongs, the human will just do fine for this guide. Statistics: Humans have no statistical bonuses or penalties.
+
Dwarves The Dwarves are somewhat similar to Gnomes. Although they don't have the business sense Gnomes have, their love and aptitude for all things technological surpasses that of the Gnomes, like their lifespan, which is about 600 years. Dwarves are even more protective of their women than the Gnomes are. This probably has something to do with the apparent lack of women in Dwarven society... the men seem to outnumber the women by nearly a 2:1 ratio. Statistics: Dwarves get +1 to Strength and Constitution, a bonus of two ranks to all the Technological skills and a starting Technological aptitude of 15, but have a -1 to Charisma and Dexterity and pay twice as much Fatigue for spellcasting. As you can see, dwarves make very good gunslingers thanks to their tech bonus, but DEX and CHA negative bonusses aren't very good indeed...
+
Halflings The Halflings usually prefer to keep to themselves, staying away from politics. Although most aren't criminal in nature, they seem to have a natural talent for thievery. While Halfling women are treated as equals by their men, they are rarely seen outside the halfling communities. While Halfling men are usually not inclined to go out into the world, Halfling women are an even rarer sight. Statistics: Halflings gain +2 to Dexterity, 2 ranks of Prowl and 1 rank of Dodge and +5% to their chance to cause a critical hit, but at the cost of a -4 modifier to Strength. The -4 modifier is crucial; no boms carrying around... But the prowling and DEX skill is nice! They'll do ok, but I prefer dwarves. Nothing keeps you from going the 'sneaky' way!
+
Ahh, My Good woman. I do have manners, sometimes.

+tags = ['Arcanum']
+weight = 0
++++
+
+First things first: you are not reading this wrong, it's magick and not magic. In the world of Arcanum, that is. There's also no such thing as mana or spellbooks. Every single spell you learn comes trough {+SPs+) (Skill Points) which you'll have to invest into several magickal realms. A little bit like Diablo 2, except the fact that once you've put 1 point into it, you can't raise it furter ot increase the power. If you know Spell #1 in the Meta realm, you'll be able to "purchase" spell #2 from the same realm, if 1) you have a CP 2) your INT is at a minimum level to cast and 3) your WP is sufficient (each level differs).
+
+## Magick: advantages & realms
+
+A complete spell list/guide can be found on Terra Arcanum. There are 16 spell realms in total: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Force, Mental, Black & White necromancy; Divination, Meta, Morphing, Nature, Phantasm, Summoning and Temporal. Each realm has its advantages and disadvantages: some realms focus on damage dealing spells, others to influence humanoids, or to summon undead. White necromancy is for example used mainly for healing purposes (by the NPCs Virgil and Dante).
+Of course you won't be able to select more than 4 realms, simply because you won't have enough CPs. Every level you'll earn 1 and every 5 levels 1 extra. That's 65 at the maximum level of 50... If you want all level #5 spells - the most powerful ones - you also need a very high WP, 18 or so. It's best to concentrate on two realms and use scrolls / item activations for other things. Yes indeed, some weapons/armor will unleash a certain spell.
+
+
+
Magick Usage in Arcanum
+
+Every single character troughout the whole game has a Magick/Tech Meter. If you invest points into schematics, which are technology, you'll align yourself more with all technological people by the values of the meter. If you can cast a lot of different spells, you'll have a magick meter. This way, a magick user with a high meter (usually a powerfull creature) won't be able to use any technological items, and vice versa. So, another advantage of magick-aligned users: you'll be able to wear magickal Armor/weapons!
+
+## Technology: advantages & schematics
+
+When your meter is fully tech-aligned, you'll encounter little problems which are quite annoying. Some examples: Virgil, the magickal aligned NPC which casts heal, will not be able to heal you anymore since those spells don't affect you at all. Very nice armor e.d. which have greatly increased AC for magickal users, will be as good as useless to you. Magickal smiths won't sell anything to you anymore. Not bad you think, you won't be able to use his stuff anyway? Wrong; you'll encounter a lot of magickal platemals which are useless but you NEED money and magickal smiths are the only ones who actually buy that stuff.
+Conclusion: tech makes the game more difficult troughout 1) equipment and 2) money. The Third thing is damage.
+Yes indeed, damage. There aren't many technological weapons, and if there are any good ones, they won't be enchanted because enchanting is magick. So, the only option you'll have left are guns. And that means carrying a LOT of bullets which cost a LOT of money and not being able to damage a lot per round in combat.
+
+
+
An intelligence booster Schematic
+
+Enough disadvantages, why do you want to be technological aligned anyway? Aha! Because 1) it makes the game much more challenging 2) it's way more fun! And the most important part - "crafting" in Arcanum is done trough schematics. You'll find a lot of them in-game without investing SPs (but you also can). You will actually be able to make your own "uber" armor (healing jacket)! Isn't that cool? Selling those things won't give you that much profit, but it's so much fun! Troughout the whole game, ingredients are scattered. Example: herbs which are combined to healing 'pills' (<> potions).
+
+## Conclusion

Party Numer ONE - November 2004
+
+
+
Level - 25. Laprovski - Male Dwarf - Raised by Monks Skills - Technologist: firearms, gunsmithy, electricity & explosives Stats - First PER Second INT Third DEX
+
+
After a few tries, this dwarf managed to get himself to Tarant. There, the beautiful game acutally started with so many options - especially for technology! The dozens of shops give you plenty of possibilities and you'll never run out of your own gadgets. This was the *decent* first-try char, but actually I would like to have a few things changed - that'll be for the next few plays. He has 2 degrees in electricity for the "charged rings" which raise your DEX by 2 each and since I didn't have enough that's good. The backup plan is throwing but I didn't get enough points and a decent non-bullet-consuming weapon... Explosives for the damage & pushing monsters backwards, works really nice. Prowling is good too but your followers tend to disagree, heh.
+
+
Level - 23. Sogg Meat Hogg - Male Half-Orge. Skills - Neutral: Melee, dodge. Stats - First STR Second DEX Third CON.
+
+
Because my head char was quite a fragile guy, he needed some kind of a body guard to protect him from any enemies which came too close. I managed to get my CHA to 9 before entering the Shrouded Hills and took Sogg along. His char/voice set is VERY boring, but he is very effective in melee combat. Nothing mastered tough, but still very good. Oh yeah, explosives tend to be quite heavy, and this guy has enough STR to pack & carry everything for me. Handy!
+
+
Level - 19. Jayna Stiles - Female Half-Elf. Skills - Technologist: Herbology, therapeuthics & heal. Stats - First INT Second DEX.
+
+
Being a technologist isn't always that easy, believe me. Especially healing: Virgil's Magick doesn't affect you anymore at all, so I was forced to kick him out and take along this little half-elf. She has good tech skills and can make nice +STAT potions, but she has no voice-over acting which is quite boring, too bad. And she's good aligned; will leave when attacking "good" people too much.
+
+
+
Party Numer TWO - 01 February 2005
+
+
+
Level - 31. Rhadek Boktor - Male Halfling - Beat with Ugly Stick Skills - Magick: Backstab, Prowling, melee, dodge, several magick realms Stats - First DEX Second WP
+
+
I like playing very very sneaky characters. Yup, they are usually evil aligned too. Virgil doesn't care anyway... This time, I'll go for backstabbing. Comes out its too bad I did that: all poor sap enemies don't even have a chance to hit me... I'm starting to think dodge are some wasted CP points! Prowl behind your enemies, backstab, un-prowl, let your compainons do something and repeat. Mostly, level 30 beasts are slain in round one when I'm level 12 or so. That's great but it's also way too powerfull and boring to play... He uses magick like haste, blind flash, charm e.d. too. Creep armor is good!
+
+
Level - 31. Virgil - Male Human. Skills - Magick: White necromancy, dodge, melee & heal / lockpicks. Stats - First INT Second DEX Third CON.
+
+
Virgil is one of the most important NPCs around the game. I was kind of sad when I dumped him in Dernhorn with Laprovski - he's really amusing. Well anyway I needed someone casting heavy heal on me when I did took some hits (very low STR+CON indeed) so why not Virgil. Dante would be a possibility too, but he doesn't have a voice set and Virgil does. Nothing much more to say...
+
+
Level - 13. Geoffrey - Male Human. Skills - Magick: Fire & 3 other magick realms Stats - First CON Second INT.
+
+
The Evil Human Wizard in the cemetary. As my little halfling is quite "evil" too (Magnus is dead I think, he didn't like me killing some low-budget people in the first few cities, I needed money. What else to do?) and packs a punch in the magick realm! He already has 20 CON (why, good question - level 13 <> 13 CPs. That's wrong but hey whatever!) and keeps on rising his INT to get some extra spells. Geoffrey will also conjue some undead for you on difficult battles. Their AI isn't that good, but better than nothing.

+Hooray hooray for classic urgh-so-bad-graphics-but-so-good-gameplay RPG-games like this! Arcanum is without a doubt the best game Troika ever made, and that deserves something extra. Like a review and a nice collection of screenshots, or something similar. Enough introduction, grab a gun and shoot! Or pick a spell and cast, if you will.
+
+What's going on, George?
+
+
+
Finetuning has never been more fun
+
+As some of you probably already know, this is a very strange game. No classic setting (orcs, elves, magie & mythes) but a mix of those same settings in combination with early technologies like guns, steam trains and such. The first time you open up the character creation window, it took me 5 hours to create a character I liked. Yes, the options and settings are incredibly deep and sometimes too complicated. At least, at the first time. Each faction balances out the other one: when you create a magic casting Elf, he won't be able to touch most technology weapons and vice versa. It is even possible you won't have access to tech stores halfway trough the game anymore! In the stats screen you'll see a Magick/Tech meter wich points what faction you are leaning towards. Magic armor with a bonus to your Armor Class is useless for a tech dwarf, for instance.
+Doctor Bomb Thrower
+
+
+
A Fine revolver Scheme
+
+It's also very important wich NPC you carry with you. Virgil for example, the Human you meet at the beginning of the game with his funny voice (too few voice acting in the game!), is a magick user. His heal spells won't have much effect if you are leaning towards the tech side too much. Luckily there is also a tech sided healer but Jayna does not play a huge role like Virgil in the plot/game. She can create spices and healing herbs from two different ingredients, provided you have the right schematic for this. You can buy schemes but they are very expensive. You can also select a few when leveling up, wich of course is limited by certain stat points. You can become doctor in traps, armor, weapons, ... by stepping up every time. Start creating a dagger, and end with a pretty big and deadly two-handed sword. Don't go screaming nerf! yet, there are pretty big stat requirements present. You won't be able to create another category (ex. armor and weapons, electricity and chemicals, ...) since you pumped all points in one way.
+Turn Based and other Options
+
+
+
My devoted follower, Virgil!
+
+Guns require bullets wich you will eventually be able to create yourself. But carrying ammo requires a lot of strength and repeater rifles empty your pocket in no time. Very annoying, constant restocking. Well, that's why you should take that big fat huge dumb ogre with you. But! There is another solution: get your hands on a bullet recipe. You only need to carry the two ingredients (lightweight) instead of the finished product. Explosives such as Molotov coctails (wich send enemies flying while you have enough time to blow a couple of holes in their head) are heavy too.
+Since we're talking about combat anyway, there are three different options to battle. real-time, semi turn-based and full turn-based. The last option is adviced. At the bottom of the screen, a bar appears wich represents the amounth of Actions you still can do (walk, shoot, reload, ...). People playing Fallout will recognize this. Real-time is basically a poor execution of a click fest like Diablo. It's funny to hear Virgil's comments on the enemy or your actions when things turn out bad. If you create a low-INT character, you'll only be able to talk me wanna sell stuff too. People will think less of you, but you'll be able to hit harder and faster. Balance, you see. By the way, ogres have a different clothing size. This means you won't be able to equip your ogre (or dwarf) with regular sized material. Neat! Or not.
+What do you mean, Ugly?

Do you like my new rifle, sweetie?
+
+The world itself is very beautiful put together. I'm not talking about the raw graphics engine, but about the little details here and there: trash bins near the streets actually have randomized -- well, trash content. Wich you eventually will use to create new items; for example rags can be used as a fuse for molotovs. Some fields are filled with spices and herbs, a crash site actually contains little springs and metal plates, and so on. The quests give you quit a bit of freedom. Will you kill the bandits for justice, will you bribe them to join you, will you insult them and chase them away, or won't you do anything at all?
+Yes, it's time. Time to talk about the actual graphics in Arcanum. Well, they suck. That's that. Remember: it's all about gameplay folks. Gameplay. And that one thing is more than present in this magnificent game. The game does require a good amounth of patience -- Arcanum throws something like ''figure it out yourself, damnit!' at you. Luckily the original box and game comes with an oversized manual. The budget edition does not, wich is a shame.
+Conclusion
+
+Good, forming a conclusion for such a game is one of the most difficult things about reviewing. As a Western RPG junk, I'd easily rate it A+ (wich means 10/10). Too bad most game sites won't agree with me. We all know Troika Games is no more. Is this game for a casual gamer? Not at all. Are you an RPG fan wich likes to delve deep (oh yeah, baby) into the game and story? By all means, please buy this excellent game.

-Platform games, one of the most dominant game genres in gaming history. They spawned a whole lot of spin-off series (run-and-gun, platform puzzles, Apogee's shareware system, Mario 64's 3D platform debut). Platform gaming has been the dominant type on every gaming platform for quite a while, but classic platforming is rarely seen on nowadays computers. Consoles have taken over the 3D platforming aspect while handheld games kept producing 2D variations (Castlevania, Wario Land), but what happened to PC platformers? Try to sum up more than five recent commercial classic 2D platform games. Euurhhghmmmhghyhg... Right.

Unfolding the History of Platform gaming would be rather boring and you can read the details at Wikipedia. So let's instead try to sum up that list... The first, and most obvious entry would be of course Captain Claw by Monolith, since I've mentioned the game more than once before. Being a game from 1997, one can imagine more exciting recent 2D platform games for the Personal Computer.
